Life through Death - Hand Sculpture

This is a sculpture created in my Design II class. It was inspired by Mark di Suvero's Hand Pierced (on Spikebed) sculpture (1959). The objective was to create a sculpture made primarily out of paper. The entire exterior is created utilizing various types of paper (cardstock, scrapbook paper, and paper towels) and paper techniques. The hand and mushrooms were created with paper towels through papier-mâché. The leaves and flowers were crafted using a combination of different origami techniques. This piece measures 27 in. x 10.5. in x 13 in.

Nature holds so much life and color within it. While death and pain is often scary and difficult to process, I wanted to demonstrate a sense of peace despite the dreadful topic. While things do eventually come to an end, life continues on, and beauty can still emerge after.
